Book Review | One Beats The Bush by Riall Nolan - The First in the Max Donovan Adventure Series

One Beats The Bush is a well-paced action thriller that ticks multiple boxes; page-turning twists, fight scenes, a lot of crime and, more importantly, a main character you cannot help but love. Vietnam veteran Max Donovan is in Bangkok, and very hungover, when his friend “Fat” Freddie Fields is arrested in San Francisco for the murder of an Australian diplomat. He knows his old buddy would never hurt a fly, so he rushes back to the Bay Area to help. Suspecting Freddie is being framed, Donovan tries to rustle up some cash to bail him out, but only succeeds in getting into trouble with the local mob.  He’ll have to solve the case on his own. Unfortunately, the only clue he has suggest the answer lies in the jungle-covered mountains of Papua New Guinea. Book Review | The Ugly Truth by L.C. North - A Netflix Crime Documentary Styled Book

I absolutely love how The Ugly Truth is written and narrated in a fun and unique way, employing a variety of mediums such as transcripts, emails, tweets and journal entries. It reminds me of Janice Hallett’s The Appeal in terms of its innovative storytelling approach.

Melanie Lange has disappeared. Her father, Sir Peter Lange, says she is a danger to herself and has been admitted to a private mental health clinic. Her ex-husband, Finn, and her best friend, Nell, say she has been kidnapped. The media will say whatever gets them the most views. But whose side are you on?

The Ugly Truth completely captivates you from the very first page and keeps you suspended in the unknown long after you’ve finished reading. Even now I haven’t decided who I believe as the story is left somewhat open-ended and it is never fully revealed what is truly happening and the reasons why. All I can confidently say is I do not like Nell, she gives me hella weird vibes!

North has nailed the true-crime documentary vibe in this book - it’s like I’m watching it on Netflix! The suspense and excitement are at times overwhelming as the plot unfolds right before your eyes. You will be kept on the edge of your seat, just like I was!

Reading this book was a real eye-opener for me. It delves into the raw and unsettling reality that often lies behind the glossy facade of celebrity culture portrayed in the media and on social media. It’s a poignant portrayal of the challenges faced by many famous figures and influencers.

Thank you again to Hayley Barnes and Transworld Books for my proof copy - always very appreciated!
